Ether.fi Cash review

4,1 / 5 our rating

Ether.fi Cash has the most attractive free standard rate in this card group and an impressive travel package. It is also the most complex product: payments can involve DeFi loans, collateral and smart contracts. We only recommend it to users who consciously manage those risks. Treat 15% as a temporary referral campaign and 3% as a rate with spending thresholds.

Ether.fi Cash is not a conventional debit card. It is a crypto-powered Visa credit card that can be paid from supported assets or used to borrow against crypto collateral. Crypto remains in a non-custodial environment, but the card can still create debt and a position subject to liquidation.

The standard 3% cashback rate is attractive. It only applies up to the monthly threshold for the Membership level, however. Higher euro spending first earns 1% and eventually 0.1%. The widely mentioned 15% is a temporary referral campaign for eligible categories, not an ongoing rate for every purchase.

Ether.fi Cash review summary

Core is free and pays 3% on the first €800 of euro spending each month. The rate then becomes 1% up to €1,500 and 0.1% above that. Luxe and Pinnacle mainly increase the spending threshold and add metal cards, lounges, insurance and subscription discounts.

The main difference from Bybit, OKX and Crypto.com is the technology behind the balance. Direct Pay Mode spends available stablecoins. Borrow Mode uses cryptoassets as collateral for a loan. A market fall can increase LTV and eventually trigger automatic liquidation.

Pros

  • 3% cashback within each level's spending threshold
  • Core membership is free
  • Non-custodial account and spending with yield-bearing assets
  • Extensive travel, purchase and insurance benefits

Cons

  • Crypto-backed borrowing adds interest and liquidation risk
  • Smart contracts, bridges and stablecoins add technical risks
  • Public pages still show conflicting thresholds and FX explanations
  • Cashback on higher euro spending falls as low as 0.1%

What is Ether.fi Cash?

Ether.fi Cash is part of the broader Ether.fi app, which combines staking, DeFi vaults, a non-custodial account, fiat transfers and a Visa card. Users control the wallet but interact with smart contracts and several financial partners.

Ether.Fi SEZC is based in the Cayman Islands. The current terms name Third National as card issuer. The issuer does not provide the DeFi loan: the Ether.fi protocol facilitates overcollateralised credit. Card and protocol therefore carry separate contracts and risks.

Ether.fi has also announced tokenised stock and metal trading, an integrated Aave market on Optimism and support for more currencies. The current terms exclude Ether.fi Trade for users in Europe. Do not treat those trading features as an available European card benefit for now.

Direct Pay Mode and Borrow Mode

Direct Pay uses supported stablecoins to settle card spending. This avoids an outstanding loan but retains stablecoin, blockchain and smart contract risk.

Borrow Mode borrows stablecoins against assets in the Ether.fi vault. The new Aave market on Optimism quotes an interest rate around 4% per year, but this is variable. Each asset has its own maximum LTV and liquidation threshold. The current help centre lists, for example, 55% LTV and a 75% liquidation threshold for wETH, and 90% and 95% for USDC.

If collateral value falls, users must add collateral or repay debt. Liquidation sells part of the collateral and can add a liquidation bonus. Cashback never compensates for a large liquidation loss.

Ether.fi Cash fees

Fees and costs

Ether.fi advertises 0% FX on EUR and USD transactions, while the detailed fee page describes a base conversion of about 1% plus a possible margin. Check the actual quoted rate before a non-USD payment. The tables below separate cashback, Membership and transaction costs.

Published progressive rates for euro transactions

Level3% cashbackAbove that threshold
CoreFirst €800 per month1% up to €1,500; then 0.1%
LuxeFirst €3,000 per month1% up to €6,000; then 0.1%
PinnacleFirst €16,000 per month1% up to €26,000; then 0.1%
VIPAnnounced: 4% on the first $50,000Invitation only; live app terms apply

The detailed fee page describes a prevailing base conversion of about 1% when currency conversion is required. Core can add 0% to 0.5% and Luxe 0% to 0.25%. Pinnacle and VIP do not add a separate margin.

At the same time, Ether.fi advertises 0% FX on EUR and USD. That may mean Ether.fi adds no margin, but the published explanation does not clearly rule out base conversion within the rate. Check the quote in the app rather than assuming a perfect interbank rate.

The current help centre charges 2% for ATM withdrawals, with a maximum of $500 per transaction and three transactions or $1,500 per 24 hours. The new announcement describes up to ten free monthly withdrawals for Pinnacle and VIP. As the documentation is still being updated, verify that benefit in the live app.

The 3% cashback is progressive

Cashback is credited automatically as USDC. Core pays 3% on euro transactions while monthly spending remains below €800, 1% between €801 and €1,500 and 0.1% above that. Luxe uses €3,000 and €6,000 thresholds. Pinnacle uses €16,000 and €26,000.

The standard USD thresholds are broader: 3% on the first $2,000 at Core, $10,000 at Luxe and $50,000 at Pinnacle. The rate then falls to 1% and finally 0.5%. Euro purchases share the monthly counter but use their separate euro ladder.

ATM withdrawals, money transfers, taxes, financial services, crypto purchases, real-estate payments and gaming transactions are among the exclusions. Refunds can reverse cashback.

New Membership levels and perks

The newly announced structure consists of Core, Luxe, Pinnacle and VIP. Core is free. According to the announcement, Luxe can be unlocked with 5,000 Membership Points, $15,000 in Liquid, 30,000 staked ETHFI or a $199 annual Fast Track. Pinnacle requires 25,000 points, $100,000 in Liquid, 150,000 ETHFI or a $999 Fast Track. VIP requires 10 million points and remains exclusive.

The public help centre currently still shows 10,000 points for Luxe and 50,000 for Pinnacle. Ether.fi says the documentation is being updated. Check the threshold in the app before moving assets or paying Fast Track.

All levels include card spending, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Visa Concierge, a global eSIM and various travel and purchase protections. Luxe adds a metal card and two premium lounge passes. Pinnacle and VIP include unlimited premium lounge access and stronger support. Availability, price and cover vary by country.

Ether.fi has the strongest free base reward but also adds the most technical risk. Bybit and OKX are simpler for daily spending. KAST is strongest for dollars. Crypto.com requires a subscription or substantial CRO, while Nexo ties its highest rewards to Credit Mode and a large portfolio.

Security and risks

Non-custodial means Ether.fi does not hold the wallet balance like a central exchange. It does not mean risk-free. Users rely on smart contracts, oracles, bridges, stablecoins and lending protocols. A bug, exploit, depeg or network problem can cause loss.

Borrow Mode adds debt and liquidation risk. Borrowing against volatile crypto can force a sale at a poor moment. Keep LTV well below the threshold, use alerts and decide in advance how to repay during a rapid market fall.

The card and protocol involve separate legal entities. Check availability and insurance by country. No cashback rate makes an incomprehensible DeFi position sensible.

Our experience and conclusion

Ether.fi Cash is more innovative than most crypto payment cards. Core is free, 3% in USDC is strong and the travel and purchase package is extensive. Experienced DeFi users may value spending against yield-bearing assets without immediately selling everything.

The cost is complexity. Public thresholds and FX explanations have not yet fully caught up with the latest announcement. Interest, collateral and liquidation can also matter far more than cashback.

Our conclusion is positive for experienced users who choose Direct Pay or manage LTV conservatively. Beginners who simply want inexpensive euro spending are better served by starting with Bybit or OKX.
