KuCoin Review

3,2 / 5 our rating

KuCoin Global remains a feature rich and low fee exchange for eligible users outside Europe, but its regulatory history deserves caution. KuCoin EU has a valid MiCA licence yet cannot currently operate, so EEA readers should use an active licensed alternative.

KuCoin needs to be reviewed as two different platforms. KuCoin Global is a large international exchange with hundreds of assets, low headline fees, futures, margin, trading bots and Earn products. KuCoin EU is a separate Austrian company for EEA customers.

The European company holds a MiCA authorisation, but it is not currently allowed to operate. Trading, deposits and onboarding remain suspended while withdrawals are available for existing assets according to KuCoin EU.

KuCoin review summary

For eligible users outside the EEA, KuCoin Global remains one of the broadest centralised exchanges. Standard spot fees normally start at 0.10% maker and 0.10% taker. Paying fees with KCS can usually reduce both by 20%, while higher VIP levels can be cheaper.

KuCoin Shares and Global platform

Global users can access spot, margin, futures, bots, staking and other Earn products where local law permits. This breadth is a strength, but it also creates substantial risk and complexity. A feature visible in the app is not necessarily permitted in your country.

KuCoin EU has a valid FMA authorisation but remains suspended after governance and key function problems. EEA readers should not use a Global referral link as a route around that restriction.

Pros

  • Hundreds of crypto assets on the Global platform
  • Global spot fees from 0.10%
  • Spot, margin, futures, bots and Earn where permitted
  • Periodic Proof of Reserves with account verification
  • Separate MiCA authorised entity for the EEA

Cons

  • KuCoin EU trading, deposits and onboarding are suspended
  • The Austrian FMA still prohibits KuCoin EU from commencing business
  • KuCoin Global pleaded guilty to an unlicensed money transmission charge in the US
  • The exchange suffered a roughly $280 million hack in 2020
  • Legal entity, products and protection vary significantly by country
  • Futures, margin and small tokens carry substantial risk

KuCoin Global versus KuCoin EU

KuCoin Global is operated through non-European group entities, including Peken Global Limited in Seychelles. Its products, terms and regulatory status differ by country.

KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH is based in Vienna. The Austrian FMA granted it permission to provide custody, crypto purchases and sales, crypto swaps, placing and transfer services under MiCA on 27 November 2025.

After a brief launch, KuCoin EU suspended new onboarding and certain activities. The FMA later confirmed that key anti-money laundering and sanctions functions had been restored, but that other governance and senior management requirements were still incomplete. The separate prohibition on commencing business therefore remained in force.

Opening and securing an eligible account

  1. Check whether KuCoin legally serves your country.
  2. Confirm whether your contract is with Global or KuCoin EU.
  3. Complete identity verification; the old claim that no KYC is needed is obsolete.
  4. Enable an authenticator app, passkey and anti-phishing code.
  5. Whitelist withdrawal addresses where possible.
  6. Deposit a small test amount first.
  7. Avoid margin and futures until you understand liquidation and funding.
  8. Move long-term holdings to a wallet you control if appropriate.

EEA users should wait for an official FMA and KuCoin EU confirmation that services have resumed. Technical access to KuCoin Global does not override regional restrictions.

3

Buy KuCoin

Go to the KuCoin market, enter the amount you want to invest and confirm. You can buy a fraction; you don't need a whole coin.

4

Store it safely

Keep your KuCoin in the exchange wallet or move it to your own wallet for full control. Never share your private keys or seed phrase.

KuCoin Global products

The Global platform offers an order book, market and limit orders, margin, futures, automated bots, API access and a wide range of smaller tokens. KuCoin Earn can include staking, savings and structured products depending on region.

Smaller tokens may have poor liquidity, large spreads and a higher delisting risk. Earn is not a bank deposit and futures can liquidate the full margin. Trading bots execute programmed rules; they do not predict the market.

KuCoin fees

Global standard spot fees normally start at 0.10% maker and 0.10% taker for regular asset classes. Enabling KCS fee payment usually lowers both to around 0.08%. Rates differ by asset class, VIP level and promotion.

Global futures generally start at 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker. Funding payments, spread and liquidation losses sit outside those headline fees. Card purchases and third-party fiat methods can also be much more expensive than depositing funds and using the spot order book.

KuCoin EU publishes a separate maker and taker schedule starting at 0.10%. That schedule is not practically usable while trading is suspended.

Fees and costs

Global fees apply only in supported countries and products. The KuCoin EU schedule is published, but EU trading remains suspended. Always confirm the legal entity, regional availability and final fee shown in your account before depositing.

KuCoin or a European alternative?

For EEA readers, an operational MiCA exchange is the sensible choice. Bitvavo is simpler and has a strong position in the Netherlands. OKX offers a more advanced European trading environment.

Outside the EEA, KuCoin Global can be attractive for its range and low fees, but compare it with locally licensed exchanges. Regulatory access, withdrawal reliability and legal recourse matter more than a referral bonus.

Regulatory history

Peken Global Limited pleaded guilty in the United States in January 2025 to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. It agreed to more than $297 million in criminal fines and forfeiture and to exit the US market for at least two years.

Canada’s FINTRAC imposed a C$19.552 million administrative penalty in 2025 for registration and reporting failures. Peken Global appealed that penalty. These cases concern the Global entity and earlier conduct, not the separate Austrian KuCoin EU company, but they are relevant when assessing the wider group’s compliance record.

The existence of a MiCA licence should therefore not be presented as proof that KuCoin has always met regulatory requirements.

Hack, reserves and custody risk

KuCoin suffered a hot wallet breach in September 2020 in which roughly $280 million was taken. The exchange said users were fully covered and much of the crypto was recovered or frozen.

KuCoin Global now publishes periodic Proof of Reserves. Its 30 June 2026 snapshot reported reserve ratios of 111% for BTC, 118% for ETH, 119% for USDT and 120% for USDC. Proof of Reserves is useful evidence for selected on-chain assets, but it is not a full audit of every liability, corporate obligation or control process.

KuCoin experiences

Experienced Global users often value the large market selection, fast order interface and automation tools. Customer support and account reviews can be slower when compliance documents or withdrawals require manual checks.

European experiences are currently dominated by the suspension. A low published fee does not compensate for a platform that cannot accept deposits or execute trades. Existing EU users should focus on withdrawing and preserving account records until the legal status changes.

Conclusion of our KuCoin review

KuCoin Global is powerful and inexpensive for eligible users outside the EEA, but its compliance history and 2020 hack justify caution. Use strong account security, keep only active trading funds on the exchange and verify local eligibility.

KuCoin EU is a different conclusion: despite its valid MiCA authorisation, it cannot currently operate under the Austrian FMA decision. We do not recommend it to new European users until both the regulator and KuCoin confirm a full resumption.

KuCoin truly has a nice support team and consistently available when you have a concern. They have a decent UI and an easy-to-use platform and a ton of campaigns that are in reality up for every one of their users. And in all honesty, I truly appreciate trading here.

  • Axel Holm

I value communication a lot so the fact that kucoin's support is pro-active makes me real satisfied with their services, I've never encountered any issues with my stay on kucoin so I'm giving it 5 stars.

  • Stacy Melendez

Set up an account and participate with their activity campaigns. Not a bad way to earn money for free.

  • Bob Gilbert

I set up an account with KuCoin today (Sept, 29th 2020). I went through all the steps, entered all my information, mobile number, email address, passwords, two factor authentication etc. Then I had a message to say that they had been hacked on the 26th and all transactions had been blocked!!! Why was I not told this before I gave them all my information??? I contacted support to delete my account and I was told that there is no way to delete accounts!!! They said I should just leave the account with all my information in it, but just not use it!!! Surely this is illegal? I should be able to delete my account if I wish to! People need to be warned about this!!! There is no mention of it on their site even though it happened 3 days ago. Bob
