Bitcoin Nears $40k While Ukraine Receives Millions In Crypto Donations

Bitcoin continued its upward trajectory over the weekend and briefly touched $40,000 again on Saturday afternoon, however profit takers closed their positions due to the current geopolitical market risk. At the time of writing on Sunday, Bitcoin pulled back to $39,300, having moved only 2% over the past week.

The crypto fear and greed index remained quite low, which means that traders are not totally convinced just yet.

Terra continued its positive momentum and has by now gained 55% in a week.

Bitcoin donations to Ukrainian NGOs

Wherever global protests or conflicts are, crypto is being used as a means to get money to people who need it most. Last year it was students protesting in Nigeria, earlier this year the so-called Freedom Convoy in Canada. This week it is Bitcoin donations to the Ukrainian military, which, according to the latest updates, surpassed $13,7 million.

Come Back Alive, a non-governmental Ukrainian organization that was formed in 2014 after Russian-backed forces invaded Crimea (in the south of the country), admitted it received by now almost a million dollars in Bitcoin donations, and the money keeps flowing in.

Other groups, such as the Ukrainian Cyber Alliance have by now received more than $100,000 in Bitcoin, Ether, Litecoin as well as several other altcoins.

Whereas some crowdfunding and payments companies have refused to allow donations to be made to groups supporting the Ukrainian military, cryptocurrencies have emerged as a powerful alternative.

Ukraine in 2021 became one of the first countries in the world to legalize bitcoin usage.
