Coinbase Review

3,8 / 5 our rating

Coinbase is easy to use, internationally established and strongly regulated in Europe, but its fees are too high. Bitvavo is considerably cheaper for ordinary EEA users where available.

Coinbase is one of the best known cryptocurrency platforms in the world. Its website and app are accessible, the parent company is publicly listed and European crypto services now operate under MiCA. The main drawback is price: Coinbase is expensive.

The simple interface no longer has one published fixed percentage. Coinbase calculates a variable fee for each order and includes a spread in the price. Even Coinbase Advanced starts at 0.40% maker and 0.60% taker for small traders.

Coinbase review summary

Coinbase launched in 2012 and combines a simple buying interface with Coinbase Advanced, staking, a custodial wallet and the separate Base ecosystem. Payment methods differ globally. EEA users can use SEPA, while local methods include iDEAL in the Netherlands and Easy Bank Transfer in several countries.

We do not repeat an old fixed simple trading rate. Coinbase states that its fee depends on factors such as payment method, order size, asset, location and market conditions. A spread is added to simple buys and sells and included in the exchange rate for conversions.

Coinbase Advanced is more transparent, but still costly. Up to $10,000 in 30 day volume, the published schedule starts at 0.40% maker and 0.60% taker. A €1,000 trade therefore costs about €4 as maker or €6 as taker, excluding market impact. Bitvavo charges €1.50 or €2.50 at its base rates.

Staking is also expensive. Coinbase lists a standard commission of 35% of network rewards for several major assets. Eligibility varies by country and some assets are no longer available for new staking in the EEA.

Pros

  • Large and established international crypto platform
  • MiCA authorization for crypto services across the EEA
  • European EMI authorizations for electronic money services
  • Very accessible website and mobile app
  • Coinbase Advanced with an order book and advanced orders
  • Hundreds of cryptocurrencies and substantial international liquidity
  • Passkeys, address allowlisting and Coinbase Vault
  • Publicly listed parent company Coinbase Global
  • Separate Base app for self custody and onchain applications

Cons

  • Simple trading has a variable fee plus spread and is expensive and less transparent
  • Coinbase Advanced starts at a high 0.40% maker and 0.60% taker
  • Coinbase takes a standard 35% of staking rewards for several major assets
  • Coinbase One has a subscription cost and does not remove the spread
  • Crypto and electronic money are not protected by a bank deposit guarantee

What is Coinbase?

Coinbase was founded by Brian Armstrong and Fred Ehrsam in 2012. It grew from a simple place to buy Bitcoin into an international crypto exchange with hundreds of assets, institutional services, custody, staking and the Base Layer 2 network.

Coinbase is still often described as a cryptocurrency broker because a beginner can enter a cash amount and buy directly. The same account also provides Coinbase Advanced, which has order books and maker and taker fees.

A standard Coinbase account is custodial. Coinbase manages the private keys and can restore account access, but may also pause transactions for security or compliance reviews.

Global and European regulation

The Coinbase company serving a user depends on location. There is no single global license that applies to every country.

For customers in the European Economic Area, the main entities are:

  • Coinbase Luxembourg S.A.: provides European crypto services and is registered under number B292147.
  • MiCA CASP authorization: CSSF authorization N00000004 permits crypto asset services across the EEA.
  • Luxembourg EMI authorization: authorization W00000022 covers electronic money token services.
  • Coinbase Ireland Limited: provides European electronic money services and holds company number 630350 and Central Bank of Ireland registration C188493.
  • Coinbase Financial Services Europe Ltd: holds CySEC license 374/19 for eligible European derivatives services.

Coinbase explains that EEA trades may be executed outside an EU trading venue, including on Coinbase Exchange in the United States. European customers consented to this execution arrangement during the MiCA migration.

Users outside the EEA should check the legal entity, license and product terms shown for their country. A United States registration or European MiCA authorization cannot automatically be applied to every global account.

Crypto and electronic money are not protected by a bank deposit guarantee. Regulation does not reimburse market losses or remove platform and counterparty risk.

Opening and verifying an account

Registration starts with an email address, password and country of residence. Coinbase then requires identity verification. EEA users must provide an accepted identity document and a live selfie. Coinbase may also ask for an address, tax details, intended account use and source of funds.

How to open an account with Coinbase

1

Create an account

Open a free account and verify your identity (KYC) with an ID. This usually takes just a few minutes.

2

Deposit funds

Add euros with a payment method that suits you. Bank methods are usually free.

iDEALSEPABank TransferCredit CardPayPal
3

Buy Coinbase

Go to the Coinbase market, enter the amount you want to invest and confirm. You can buy a fraction; you don't need a whole coin.

4

Store it safely

Keep your Coinbase in the exchange wallet or move it to your own wallet for full control. Never share your private keys or seed phrase.

Account features remain limited until verification is complete. Purchase and withdrawal limits depend on country, payment method, verification status and risk controls. Old universal weekly limits are no longer reliable.

Coinbase widget

The archived image shows an earlier version of the simple buying interface. The current flow still requires you to select an asset, enter an amount and review the full cost before confirming.

Simple Coinbase trading fees

Simple buying, selling and converting is the most expensive and least transparent part of Coinbase. The Coinbase fee can depend on:

  • payment method;
  • order size;
  • selected asset;
  • country;
  • market conditions;
  • costs incurred to execute the transaction.

A spread is included in the price for simple buys and sells. For a conversion, the spread is included in the exchange rate. The order preview is therefore the only reliable source for the current total.

This structure makes comparisons difficult. A seemingly modest visible fee can still be accompanied by an unfavourable spread. Compare the amount of crypto you receive with the live market price before confirming.

Coinbase Advanced fees

Coinbase Advanced uses an order book and starts at:

  • Maker: 0.40%.
  • Taker: 0.60%.

A market order normally removes liquidity and pays the taker rate. A limit order that first adds liquidity to the book may qualify for the maker rate.

The fee tier is based on total USD trading volume over the previous 30 days and is recalculated regularly. The tier at the time an order is placed determines the fee.

Coinbase Advanced is cheaper than simple trading, but 0.60% taker is still high. In the EEA, Bitvavo starts at 0.25% taker. Users elsewhere should compare Coinbase with a regulated low fee platform available in their own country.

Coinbase One

Coinbase One is a paid membership with Basic, Preferred and Premium tiers. Eligible simple spot trades have no separate trading fee within these monthly limits:

  • Basic: up to $500.
  • Preferred: up to $10,000.
  • Premium: no fixed volume limit for this benefit.

The spread still applies, and the subscription itself has a cost. Coinbase Advanced, derivatives and several other services are excluded from the normal zero fee benefit.

Some Coinbase One benefits are restricted by country. The published Coinbase Advanced rebate does not apply universally, so check the exact membership page inside your account.

Fees and costs

Coinbase does not publish one universal percentage for simple trades. The Coinbase fee and spread are calculated for each order and shown in the preview. Coinbase Advanced uses a maker and taker model based on 30 day volume. The fee page inside your account remains decisive.

Coinbase or Bitvavo?

For standard euro spot trading, Bitvavo is considerably cheaper where available:

Coinbase may suit users who specifically need its international liquidity, a certain asset, Coinbase Advanced, Base or institutional infrastructure. For routine buying and selling in euros, those features rarely justify the fee difference.

Payment methods

Payment methods depend on the user’s country. EEA options include:

  • SEPA: adding and cashing out euros, usually in one to three business days.
  • iDEAL: buying and adding euros in the Netherlands.
  • Easy Bank Transfer: adding euros in the Netherlands, Finland, France, Germany and Ireland.
  • 3D Secure card: instant buying and selected funding or cash out functions.
  • PayPal: buying and cashing out where supported.
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay: available for eligible purchases or funding.

Outside the EEA, Coinbase offers different bank and card methods. Always check the payment fee and final crypto amount in the preview. A free cash deposit does not remove the trading fee or spread.

Assets on Coinbase

Coinbase supports hundreds of cryptocurrencies, but local availability differs. Major assets include Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin, along with altcoins and stablecoins.

Check the current Coinbase catalogue for the account’s country. Buying, selling, deposits and withdrawals can have different availability even for the same asset.

Coinbase Website

MiCA affects stablecoin availability in Europe. Coinbase restricts several stablecoins it considers noncompliant for EEA retail customers, while it continues to support USDC and EURC as compliant products.

Coinbase referral rewards

Coinbase operates several referral programs and temporary new user campaigns. We do not present an old fixed reward as a current universal offer.

The regular referral program requires a new user to register through an eligible link and complete a qualifying simple purchase within the specified period. The reward and minimum purchase differ by country. Coinbase Advanced purchases and transactions involving stablecoins may be excluded.

Check the current landing page for the exact offer. Our guide to free Bitcoin explains other promotions, but no referral reward should be treated as guaranteed investment income.

Staking

Coinbase supports staking for eligible proof of stake assets and countries. It lists a standard commission of 35% of network rewards for ADA, ATOM, AVAX, DOT, ETH, MATIC, SOL and XTZ. The displayed APY is after Coinbase’s commission.

Eligible Coinbase One members may receive lower commission rates:

  • Basic: 31.75%.
  • Preferred: 28.50%.
  • Premium: 25.25%.

These percentages still represent a substantial part of the network reward. Instant unstaking costs 1% of the full transaction amount. Waiting for the standard network period avoids that fee.

EEA availability is narrower. New staking for AVAX and XTZ was removed for EEA customers on 26 November 2025.

Derivatives in the EEA

Eligible EEA customers may receive access to derivatives through Coinbase Financial Services Europe Ltd under CySEC license 374/19.

Access requires additional verification and an assessment of knowledge, experience and suitability. The service is not available in every country or account.

Derivatives are complex and can cause the rapid loss of all capital committed to a position. A MiFID II license does not remove market and liquidation risk.

Coinbase wallet and Base app

The standard Coinbase account contains a custodial cryptocurrency wallet. Coinbase controls the private keys and may help restore account access.

The separate Base app, formerly Coinbase Wallet, is intended for self custody. The user controls the recovery method and is responsible for keeping it secure. Losing a recovery phrase or passkey can mean permanent loss of access.

Long term holders may also consider a personal cold wallet. Always verify the network and receiving address before withdrawing.

Buying, selling and withdrawals

Coinbase lets users buy cryptocurrency through the simple interface or Coinbase Advanced. Selling to a supported cash balance and cashing out to a bank are also available in supported countries.

If Bitcoin is already held in the standard Coinbase account, it does not need to be sent to an external address before selling. Assets in the Base app or another self custody wallet require an onchain transfer to the correct Coinbase deposit address.

External crypto sends carry a charge based on Coinbase’s estimate of the current network fee. The estimate is shown before confirmation.

Is Coinbase safe?

Coinbase is a large publicly listed company with a long operating history. Account security tools include:

  • passkeys and physical security keys;
  • two factor authentication;
  • address allowlisting;
  • new device confirmation;
  • active session management;
  • Coinbase Vault with multiple email approvals and a 48 hour delay;
  • monitoring for suspicious activity.

Coinbase Global has traded on Nasdaq under ticker COIN since its 2021 direct listing.

These controls do not eliminate phishing, malware, sim swapping or user error. A passkey or physical security key provides stronger protection than relying only on text messages.

Insurance and safeguarding

Coinbase carries crime insurance for part of the digital assets in its storage systems. It is not individual insurance for every customer and does not cover losses caused by unauthorised access after a user’s credentials are compromised.

Total losses from an incident can exceed insurance proceeds. The policy is therefore limited and not a personal guarantee for every balance.

European electronic money must be safeguarded separately from the EMI’s own funds. Safeguarding is not a bank deposit guarantee. Crypto and electronic money are not covered by the Irish or Luxembourg deposit guarantee and investor compensation schemes.

Coinbase Services

Apps and customer support

The standard Coinbase app focuses on simple trading, recurring buys, staking and portfolio management. Coinbase Advanced is available within the same account for users who want an order book, limit orders and lower fees.

Support is provided through the help centre and contact options inside the account. Coinbase warns about fake phone numbers and support impersonators. A genuine employee will not ask for a password, two factor code, recovery phrase or payment to resolve a problem.

Company details

For EEA customers, the main companies are:

  • Coinbase Luxembourg S.A., 58 Boulevard Grande-Duchesse Charlotte, L-1330 Luxembourg, registration B292147.
  • Coinbase Luxembourg S.A., CSSF CASP number N00000004 and EMI number W00000022.
  • Coinbase Ireland Limited, Ground Floor, 45 Mespil Road, Dublin D04 W2F1, company number 630350 and CBI registration C188493.
  • Coinbase Financial Services Europe Ltd, CySEC license 374/19 for eligible derivatives services.

Users outside the EEA should check the provider and legal terms shown for their country. Different Coinbase services can be supplied by different group companies.

Our Coinbase review verdict

Coinbase is easy to use, internationally established and better regulated in Europe than it was several years ago. Its MiCA authorization, Coinbase Advanced, broad asset catalogue, account security and Base ecosystem are meaningful strengths.

The fees remain the problem. Simple trading has a variable fee plus spread, Coinbase Advanced begins at 0.40% maker and 0.60% taker, and Coinbase takes a standard 35% commission from rewards for several major staking assets.

Bitvavo is substantially cheaper for ordinary euro trading where available. Outside Europe, users should compare Coinbase with a properly regulated low fee exchange in their own country.

Our rating is 3.8 out of 5. Coinbase scores well for usability, regulation, assets and security, but loses many points for trading costs, staking costs and price transparency.
