CEX.IO has not shut down globally, but it is not a practical choice for EU or EEA users. New European customers are not accepted and affected accounts cannot deposit or trade. We recommend Bitvavo in supported European countries.
CEX.IO has not shut down worldwide. It remains active in certain markets outside the European Economic Area, so international readers must check the rules and features for their own country.
The situation is very different for EU and EEA users. CEX.IO is not onboarding new European customers during the current regulatory period. Affected accounts show that deposits and trading are unavailable, while balance access and fiat or crypto withdrawals remain possible.
CEX.IO review summary
CEX.IO launched in 2013 and historically offered instant purchases, spot trading, staking and several payment methods. Product availability has always varied by country.
The current European restrictions make it unsuitable for new EU and EEA customers. CEX.IO attributes the unavailable functions to ongoing regulatory updates related to MiCA. Its terms also state that new EU and EEA users are not being onboarded during this period.
Existing users can still view balances and withdraw according to the account notice. In supported European countries, Bitvavo is a more practical alternative.
Pros
- Balances remain visible
- CEX.IO says fiat and crypto can still be withdrawn
- The platform remains active in some markets outside the EEA
Cons
- No new EU or EEA customers
- Deposits and trading are unavailable on affected accounts
- Uncertain European status during MiCA related changes
- Availability and legal entity vary considerably by country
Is CEX.IO still operating?
Yes, but not with the same service everywhere. Non-European users may still have access to trading, deposits and other products, depending on their country and contracting entity.
For affected European accounts, the service is effectively in withdrawal mode. It should therefore not be presented as an active European exchange.

What should an existing customer do?
- Sign in only through the official app or a domain you entered yourself.
- Check all fiat and crypto balances.
- Download transaction history for your records.
- Withdraw fiat to a bank account in your own name.
- Send crypto to a verified wallet using the correct network.
- Keep the confirmation for every withdrawal.
Use a small test transaction first when withdrawing crypto if the fee makes that practical.

CEX.IO fees
The old review contained card, instant purchase and trading fees. Those figures no longer describe what an affected EU or EEA customer can actually use.
Withdrawal fees may still apply. Crypto withdrawal costs depend on the asset and network, while fiat payout costs depend on the selected method.
Fees and costs
A live trading fee table is not meaningful for affected European accounts while deposits and trading are unavailable. Withdrawal, network and payout fees may still apply.
Current account functions
| Function | Status | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| New account | Unavailable | No new EU or EEA users during this period |
| Deposits | Unavailable | Restricted during ongoing regulatory changes |
| Trading | Unavailable | No active buying, selling or trading |
| View balance | Available | Through the account menu |
| Fiat and crypto withdrawals | Available | Costs vary by method and network |

CEX.IO or Bitvavo
For EU and EEA users the comparison is straightforward. Bitvavo accepts customers in supported countries, holds a MiCA licence and provides active euro deposits and crypto trading. CEX.IO currently does not provide those functions on affected European accounts.
Outside Europe, Bitvavo may not be available and CEX.IO may still operate normally. International users must compare the exact local entity, fees and withdrawal options.

Is CEX.IO safe?
CEX.IO says customer funds remain safe and available. That is the company’s own statement rather than an independent guarantee. Keeping withdrawals open is important, but it does not establish when full European services will return.
Do not leave funds solely in anticipation of staking, promotions or trading features becoming available again.

CEX.IO experiences
Recent European experiences should be judged mainly on withdrawal processing and customer support. Older reviews about deposits, trading or card purchases may describe functions that are no longer available to the reader.
Conclusion of our CEX.IO review
CEX.IO remains a global platform, but affected EU and EEA accounts cannot deposit or trade and new European users are not accepted. We therefore do not recommend it as a European exchange.
Existing users should review their balances and withdrawal options. Readers outside the EEA must verify current local availability before making any decision.

Never use this platform, They are useless in customer support. They will hold your money for not transferring it to your account without even saying what is the problem. Even Emailing and asking for their support is useless with no reply at all. If you will go to chat support. A bot will answer you with a standard question and doesn't bring you to answer your problem.

Stefany Anderson clueless and unhelpful I have been having issues with a transfer and Stefany Anderson from the support team has been pretty much useless, replying sporadically with the same standard messages. CEX has been holding my money for 10 days now without returning them or assigning them to the right account. After this, I will never want to deal with them anymore especially with Stefany Anderson which proved to be clueless and unhelpful.

As someone who is learning online trading, this is the platform i will highly consider when the time is right to start trading. I have used the exchange before, and the service was top class.
