Was Capitol Attack Paid For With $500k In Bitcoin?

Rumor has it that an anonymous French programmer (who committed suicide last week) paid for the Capitol attack of 6 January by sending Bitcoin donations to several far-right activists in the US.

Will crypto be able to shake off its connection to the Trump mob that ransacked the Capitol building after it was also in the crosshairs of US politics over the QFS blockchain conspiracy? We explain.

US Media site Pro Publica explained how Capitol rioters planned their attack for weeks in advance and discussed it on sites like Parler, Gab and even Twitter, in plain sight of police and security forces. Parler has since been removed from Google and Apple app stores, to great discontent of Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson.

Now, crypto study desk Chainanalysis claims it can link the organization of that riot to a Bitcoin payment made by an anonymous French programmer, who has since died.

We have also gathered evidence that strongly suggests the donor was a now-deceased computer programmer based in France

Chainanalysis said (French media reported two days ago the man committed suicide).

According to their report, the man sent 28.15 Bitcoins (worth some $500k) at the beginning of December 2020 to some 22 separate addresses in a single transaction. Most of those addresses belonged to personalities either tied to far-right activists in the US or people that were present at the Capitol attack.

If the Capitol attack goes to trial, and seeing that many of the organizers have so far been arrested or charged, it probably will, this could become yet another media attack point for classic finance against the cryptosphere.

ECB Warning

Earlier this week we urged the cryptosphere to come together and shake off the connections with illegal substances on the dark web. It came just after European security forces announced that they had closed another Silk Road successor.

Two days later, ECB President Christine Lagarde said that Bitcoin was too many times connected to criminality. Ms Lagarde stated:

This is an asset and it’s a highly speculative asset which has conducted some funny business and some interesting and totally reprehensible money laundering activity.

Unless Bitcoin is able to get rid of all these rumors and it’s connection to darkweb activities, regulatory checkups could happen sooner rather than later.
