Tuner: Crypto plays a leading role yet again in this New York thriller

Just as Bitcoin finds itself once again trapped in the broad trading range between $60k and $66k, where it has been stuck for months, crypto is being introduced to an ever wider audience. While we are still awaiting The Altruists (about FTX and Sam Bankman-Fried) on Netflix, I came across another good film this weekend in which crypto plays a central role.

Jean Reno

Tuner is an entertaining thriller starring Dustin Hoffman (now 88), Jean Reno (the legendary Léon), and Leo Woodall (whom you’ll recognize from the second season of The White Lotus). The film received excellent reviews and demonstrates how easily crypto can play a central role in any crime thriller set in 2026.

The protagonist discovers that his exceptional hearing, which he primarily uses to tune pianos, can also be used to crack safes. The film’s most significant heist involves a Korean family and the theft of a “seed phrase”, the combination of (in this case) 16 words required to recover a crypto account if necessary.

We can thus add another film to the list of “honorable mentions” for Bitcoin and crypto in Hollywood.

As far as I’m concerned, Silk Road from 2021, about the founding of the (at the time very) popular site with the same name here you could buy all kinds of illegal substances with Bitcoin, still ranks as the best crypto movie.
