Overly Attached Girlfriend Sells Own Meme As An NFT For $411k

You may have never heard of Laina Morris, but chances are you’ve seen her pictured in a meme many times already whilst surfing the internet. Laina achieved world-fame accidentally by making a parody song to Justin Bieber’s song boyfriend in which she stared obsessively at the camera.

Her look was turned into a meme called Overly Attached Girlfriend. It’s been looking at you since 2012 on various social media platforms.

Let me first of all state that I still believe the whole NFT market is hyped up and in a state of bubble (mark the SNL video about NFTs last week) at the moment.

However, as it is part of the blockchain and thus helps to spread the word about cryptocurrencies, we are forced to cover it, but don’t come crying if this thing comes crashing down.

However, for Laina I’m willing to make an exception. Her life was turned upside down in 2012 when she entered a contest organized by the PR team for Justin Bieber.

She wrote a parody to his song boyfriend, from the perspective of an obsessive girlfriend, and sang the song whilst staring creepily into the camera. She called it JB Fanvideo and hoped she would win the prize.

The text went:

If I was your girlfriend / I’d never let you leave / without a small recording device / taped under your sleeve. I’ll always be checking up on you / Hey, boy, who you talking to? / Spend a day with your girl, I’ll be calling you my husband.”

The video went viral but for all the wrong reasons of course.

Laina’s staring face got turned into a meme herself and she recognized herself on the internet for years on end, to great frustration of herself and as the butt of jokes by future boyfriends of course.

Luckily for her she’s finally been able to put all that behind her by selling her original meme (which she owns as the person in the picture herself) for $411,000, paid for in Ethereum.

The buyer is 3F Music, a Dubai-based music studio.
