Biggest Iranian crypto platform hacked by Israël

Iran’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Nobitex, got hacked yesterday. More than $90 million worth of cryptocurrencies were stolen, with a pro-Israel hacking group claiming responsibility. The cyberattack on the exchange, Nobitex, appeared to be prompted by the ongoing hostilities between Israel and Iran and was immediate front page news in the USA.

On Wednesday, June 18, Iran-based crypto exchange Nobitex announced that it had been hacked. Fortunately, the majority of the funds were located in cold wallets, which were reportedly not affected by the attack. According to Nobitex, the affected funds represent “only a small portion of the assets in hot wallets”.

It is therefore no surprise that this hack was quickly reported by crypto researcher ZachXBT. According to his Telegram post, the hackers, who are said to be a group from Israel, stole $81.7 million worth of crypto from various blockchains.

Furthermore, the funds have since been destroyed. It was later revealed that a pro-Israel hacking group, “Gonjeshke Darande”, was behind the attack.

The group claimed responsibility for the attack on X and also announced that the full source code of Nobitex would be released within 24 hours and that “any assets left after that date are at risk!”

The group explained that they had attacked Nobitex because of its ties to the Iranian government.
