August Best Crypto Month of 2026 as Altcoins Edge Out Bitcoin
The crypto market is closing August on a strong note. Bitcoin is up 24.5% this month, but the largest altcoins have collectively managed to edge past that figure. According to data from CryptoRank, the total market capitalisation of the 100 biggest altcoins grew 26.5% in August. That makes the last full summer month the strongest crypto month of 2026.
Altcoins edge out Bitcoin
Bitcoin has little to be ashamed of. With a monthly gain of 24.5%, BTC has recovered solidly and August ranks among the coin’s best months this year.
Still, growth among the major altcoins is slightly higher. The combined market capitalisation of the top 100 altcoins rose 26.5%, two percentage points more than Bitcoin’s gain.
The average return of the altcoins surveyed also comes in at 24.5%, exactly matching Bitcoin’s monthly performance.
The figures show that the recovery is not being driven solely by Bitcoin and a small number of large cryptocurrencies. Capital is clearly also flowing towards the broader altcoin market in August.
The median tells a different story
There is an important nuance in the numbers, though. The median return for the altcoins stands at 17.1%, well below both the average of 24.5% and the 26.5% rise in total altcoin market capitalisation.
The gap between the average and the median suggests that a few strongly performing cryptocurrencies are pulling the average upwards. The typical altcoin is therefore delivering a lower return than Bitcoin.
That makes it difficult to talk of a broad altseason on the basis of these figures alone. The market is clearly moving higher, but not every altcoin is benefiting to the same degree.
A strong end to the summer
For the crypto market, August marks a striking turnaround either way. Bitcoin is up 24.5%, while the average and median performance of the largest altcoins also remains firmly positive.
The combination of the two is particularly interesting. During some rallies, Bitcoin grabs almost all the attention and many smaller coins are left behind. In August, that picture is less pronounced.
The question now is whether altcoins can hold their narrow lead as September begins. The 26.5% growth in their combined market capitalisation is positive, but the 17.1% median makes clear that the differences between individual coins remain wide.
