ZCash, Pons, Uniswap and many other altcoins are shooting higher. For weeks, seasoned crypto investors have all been asking the same question: has the altcoin season finally arrived? The short answer is no, according to the sites that track the data, but more and more signals suggest the market is closer to that phase than ever.

Rally

Historically, an altcoin season only begins after Bitcoin has put in a strong upward trend and then enters a period of consolidation. In that phase, investors often shift part of their Bitcoin profits into riskier assets, such as Ethereum and smaller cryptocurrencies like XRP and ZCash. Although some altcoins have posted impressive returns in recent weeks, the broader market still does not meet the conditions that typically accompany a full-blown altcoin rally.

One of the key indicators remains Bitcoin dominance, which measures Bitcoin’s share of the total crypto market. Despite recent corrections, Bitcoin still accounts for a significant portion of total market capitalisation. A sustained decline in that dominance would point to capital flowing increasingly towards alternative cryptocurrencies. On a large scale, that is not yet happening; the market is still too dependent on geopolitical conditions.

Ethereum’s performance also remains crucial. In earlier market cycles, Ethereum often acted as the bridge between a Bitcoin rally and a broader altcoin advance. The world’s second-largest cryptocurrency is showing strength again (and has risen far faster than Bitcoin in recent weeks), but many investors are still waiting for a convincing breakout before they can talk of the return of genuine risk appetite among mainstream investors.

The result is a market that looks increasingly optimistic, but is not yet euphoric. For now, Bitcoin remains the engine of the crypto market. Until capital spreads more broadly across the entire ecosystem, it may still be too early to speak of a true altcoin season.

Still, the pieces of the puzzle seem to be slowly falling into place. The altcoin season has not begun, but for the first time in a long time, it feels as though it is closer than ever.
