Only exchanges with a MiCA authorisation
Since 30 December 2024 the MiCA regulation applies across the European Union, and national transition arrangements for previously registered firms ended in the course of 2025, so a national registration alone is no longer enough. What a MiCA authorisation means for you:

What is Zilliqa?
Zilliqa is a blockchain for smart contracts and applications that became known as one of the first networks to use sharding. With sharding the network is split into pieces that process transactions in parallel, so the chain can handle more as it grows. The network went live in 2019.
In the first quarter of 2025 the project launched Zilliqa 2.0, a thorough overhaul of the network. Zilliqa moved to Proof of Stake, so you can stake ZIL and take part in securing the network, and it gained full support for the Ethereum Virtual Machine. That means developers can now also run familiar Ethereum contracts on it. ZIL remains the coin with which costs on the network are paid.
Storing Zilliqa in a wallet
After your purchase, your ZIL sits in the exchange wallet, which controls the keys. For larger amounts or longer-term storage, a wallet of your own is safer. Your options:
- Exchange wallet: built in at the exchange, easy, but you do not hold the keys
- Software wallet: a Zilliqa wallet such as ZilPay, with which you manage and can stake ZIL
- Hardware wallet: a device such as a Ledger that keeps your keys offline, safest for larger amounts
With a wallet of your own you get a recovery phrase of usually twelve or twenty-four words. Whoever has those words has access to your ZIL, so keep it offline, never share it and never take a photo of it. If you lose the recovery phrase, your Zilliqa cannot be recovered.
