Buy Zcash (ZEC)
Zcash (ZEC) is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency still available at some European exchanges. Before buying, check whether the provider supports only internal buying and selling or also withdrawals to your own Zcash wallet.
Where can I buy Zcash?
Zcash is less widely available in Europe than Bitcoin or Ethereum. There is no blanket prohibition: some regulated providers still list ZEC. Functionality can be limited, however. One exchange may support buying, selling and withdrawals, while another keeps all trading inside its own custody environment.
Check this before buying. Without withdrawals, you cannot use Zcash’s privacy functionality from your own wallet and remain dependent on the exchange. Availability can change as regulation and internal risk policies evolve.
What is Zcash?
Zcash launched in 2016 from code based on Bitcoin and focuses on financial privacy. The network uses zero-knowledge proofs, which can show that a transaction is valid without revealing all of its details publicly.
Zcash has two broad address types:
- Transparent addresses: values and transactions are public, similar to Bitcoin
- Shielded addresses: the sender, receiver and amount can be hidden
Privacy is optional on Zcash, unlike Monero where it is enabled by default. Not every wallet or exchange supports shielded deposits and withdrawals.
Strong performance in 2025 and 2026
ZEC experienced an exceptional recovery from its 2024 low, especially during 2025, and continued to trade at substantially higher levels in 2026 than in preceding years. That historical performance is notable but does not imply it will be repeated. Zcash has also suffered long and severe drawdowns and remains below the extreme price seen around its 2016 launch.
Consider liquidity, regulation, network use and withdrawal availability as well as returns. The Zcash price can move sharply.
Zcash and European regulation
Privacy coins receive additional scrutiny because financial service providers must monitor transactions. MiCA does not contain a simple blanket ban on every privacy coin, but exchanges must comply with anti-money-laundering requirements and their own listing standards. Many therefore choose not to list ZEC or limit certain functions.
A MiCA authorisation for an exchange does not mean a regulator has approved ZEC itself. It covers the provider’s services.
Storing Zcash
Use a wallet that supports ZEC and the address type you need. Zashi is a wallet from the Zcash ecosystem that supports shielded transactions. Hardware wallets may support ZEC, although often through transparent addresses or specific software.
Before withdrawing, check:
- Whether the exchange enables ZEC withdrawals
- Whether the receiving address is transparent or shielded
- Whether both sides support that address type
- The withdrawal fee and minimum amount
Send a small test amount first. Keep the recovery phrase offline and never share it.
Main risks
- Limited availability and possible future delistings
- Platforms that allow internal trading but no withdrawal
- Price volatility following unusually strong historical gains
- Limited support for shielded transactions
- Technical and regulatory risks around privacy technology
