The NEO price and volatility

What is NEO?
NEO is a blockchain from China for smart contracts and applications, which is why it is sometimes called the Chinese Ethereum. The project started as AntShares and was renamed NEO in 2017. Developers can build smart contracts on it in several well-known programming languages. In 2021 the N3 upgrade brought a thoroughly renewed version of the network.
NEO works with two tokens. NEO itself stands for your share in the network and gives voting rights. By holding NEO you automatically build up the second token, GAS, with which transaction and contract costs on the network are paid. There can be at most 100 million NEO, and a NEO cannot be split into small parts: you work with whole units.
Storing NEO in a wallet
After your purchase, your NEO sits in the exchange wallet, which controls the keys. For larger amounts or longer-term storage, and to build up GAS, a wallet of your own is handy. Your options:
- Exchange wallet: built in at the exchange, easy, but you do not hold the keys
- Software wallet: a NEO wallet such as NeoLine or OneGate, with which you manage NEO and build up GAS
- Hardware wallet: a device such as a Ledger that keeps your keys offline, safest for larger amounts
With a wallet of your own you get a recovery phrase of usually twelve or twenty-four words. Whoever has those words has access to your NEO, so keep it offline, never share it and never take a photo of it. If you lose the recovery phrase, your NEO cannot be recovered.
