What is Kusama?
Kusama is closely tied to Polkadot and is often called its canary network. It uses much the same technology, but is meant as a faster-moving, more experimental environment where developers test new ideas and networks before bringing them to Polkadot. Its governance and upgrades move more quickly, which suits projects that want to try things in a live setting. Like Polkadot, Kusama lets separate networks, called parachains, connect and share security.
KSM is the coin of the network. It is used to pay fees, to stake and help secure the network, to take part in governance and to bid for a parachain slot.
Storing Kusama in a wallet
After your purchase, your KSM sits in the exchange wallet, which controls the keys. For larger amounts or longer-term storage, a wallet of your own is safer. Your options:
- Exchange wallet: built in at the exchange, easy, but you do not hold the keys
- Software wallet: a wallet from the Polkadot ecosystem, such as Talisman, the Polkadot.js extension or Nova Wallet

With a wallet of your own you get a recovery phrase of usually twelve or twenty-four words. Whoever has those words has access to your KSM, so keep it offline, never share it and never take a photo of it. If you lose the recovery phrase, your Kusama cannot be recovered.
